Brooming Mephitic Blast
|Live in Porto|
Recorded
live in Porto on the 25th of February 2005, this release shows Hototogisu at
their most intense. A 45 minutes long sondwall that does not fade through the
filters of the recording. A true highlight on the discography of the musicians
Matthew Bower and Marcia Bassett.
The noise gushing from the speakers at the concert was so loud that the sound
engineer of the venue decided to turn off the PA midway through the
performance. But you will feel no difference. The sound just continues to grow
louder, harsher and more hypnotic.
Close to the end, the musicians step down the stage and sit with the audience.
Admiring what they had created. What you hear during the last minutes of the
recording is all self-generated.
Do not adjust the volume of your stereo.
This edition comes in a gatefold cardboard sleeve with silkscreened original
art by Marcia Bassett.
Limited to 170 copies.
"Taken from the bone blasting gig
with Richard Youngs in Porto earlier this year, Brooming Mephitic Blast is the
first release on the Soopa/Esquilo live series with a second in-the-flesh
session coming soon from Wolf Eyes. Limited to only 170 copies, the disc
charts a return to the body abandoning, heavy-as-hades dinosaur drone of
Hototogisu’s Ghosts From The Sun era, with a bit of AMM live at The Crypt and
John Cale’s Table of the Elements sides thrown in for good measure. Starting
with a hypnotic percussive chime as if beckoning initiates into some sick
secret meeting, the warning bell is quickly submerged beneath an awesome drawn
out vocal duo that sounds like an amplified swarm of killer bees tickling Inca
Ore to death. Matthew Bower (Skullflower/Sunroof/Total et al) and Marcia
Bassett (Double Leopards/Zaika/Zaimph/GHQ et al) channel gigantic chasms of
stratospheric feedback from the middle of a pentagram of FX pedals, generating
a devastating black hole blues like Hermann Nitsch receiving electro shock
therapy from Austin Osman Spare. Cranked amps spew heroic doses of constantly
fluctuating tonal thrust, while Bower rips some of the most beautifully
harrowing guitar I have heard since Fushitsusha’s Double Live, offering hearty
salutations to a well worn canopy of thunder clouds. Hard card gatefold sleeve,
including great looking artwork by Marcia. Highly recommended."
